Health Insurance

Peace of mind for you and your family

Do I need health insurance in New Zealand?

The New Zealand health system is robust and much of a person’s care in NZ is handled either by the public health system or by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Any urgent or emergency treatment will be taken care of through the public system.

In tandem with public health, ACC covers the cost of medical fees, treatments, as well as rehabilitation and residential care costs related to accidents or injuries.

Any non-emergency conditions need to go through assessments and qualify for elective treatments, such as hip replacements, hysterectomies or MRI scans. Elective surgery waiting times vary dependent on the procedure required and the number of specialists in your area.

Health Insurance provides peace of mind that you and your family may have faster access to medical treatment when you need it most.

Health insurance allows you to potentially cover the gaps that may exist when relying on the public system, such as some elective treatments. If you are diagnosed with a non-acute condition there might be a lengthy wait for treatment, this is where private health insurance can help. It may provide faster access to treatment, reduces the potential costs of any private treatment options, and gives you more choice over when you receive different treatments.

Health cover helps pay for private medical care and can give you access to alternative treatment that is often not funded or easily accessible. You can also choose plans that cover day to day care like GP visits, dental check-ups, and optometry.

Other Health-related policies can include medical insurance; which covers private hospital bills and other medical costs, trauma or critical illness cover; which gives a lump sum under certain conditions, income protection insurance, disability insurance, and mortgage protection.
